RISE validates huge energy saving potential of Vesiro’s software

RISE validates that Vesiro’s prototype reduces server energy consumption by up to 46%

Data is the oil of the 21st century. Just as oil powered the industrial revolution, data is powering the digital revolution. As a result, datacenters consume an ever-growing amount of energy, with some estimates showing that they will represent 10% of the total global energy consumption by 2030. More efficient solutions are needed to mitigate the enormous amounts of energy needed to run those datacenters. One part of the issue is data analysis at large scale, which requires large server clusters to run databases and search engines.

Therefore, Vesiro has developed a software to drastically improve search speeds in Elasticsearch. The software functions as a plug-and-play add-on to Elasticsearch. It is in prototype stage, and has now been tested and validated by an external partner for the first time. The results show that Vesiro’s software makes one of the fastest NoSQL database solutions in the world nearly twice as fast, which in turn has a great energy saving effect.

RISE Research Institutes of Sweden is Sweden’s research institute and innovation partner. Through international collaboration with industry, academia and the public sector, they ensure business competitiveness and contribute to a sustainable society.

In a project financed by Energimyndigheten (Swedish Energy Agency), RISE tested Vesiro’s software prototype to measure its energy saving effects. The tests were conducted at RISE’s Ice datacenter, which is a testbed that handles projects and testing in all parts of the stack, including incoming infrastructure and construction of data centre facilities, edge and cloud applications, IT architecture and machine learning.

The test results of the tests are incredible! Using before and after comparisons of search times and energy consumption figures for the same number of searches performed, it has now been proven that Vesiro’s software reduced search times by up to nearly 47%, which in turn led to a reduction in energy consumption by the server by up to nearly 46%. This means that by using Vesiro’s simple, non-disruptive add-on software to Elasticsearch, the same amount of search can be performed with a significantly more efficient use of the underlying server hardware.

This is an indication of the great potential that Vesiro’s technology holds. Enabling a more efficient use of server hardware can lead to both cost savings and reduction in energy consumption for companies running large clusters of Elasticsearch as part of their operations.
